Case Study: A Full-Enclosure Stacking Solution for Bagged Potatoes in Cold Storage

2025-10-09 14:00

In agricultural warehousing, especially within a cold storage environment, a key challenge is how to stack bagged products like potatoes in a way that is high-density, safe, and structurally stable. This case study details how we designed a full-enclosure post pallet system specifically for a cold storage environment, capable of stacking 1-ton loads of bagged potatoes four tiers high.

The Challenge: Safely and Densely Stacking Bagged Potatoes in Cold Storage

An agricultural company in North America needed to store large quantities of bagged potatoes in their cold storage facility and faced the following specific challenges:

Our Engineered Solution: A Modular Full-Enclosure Post Pallet

We designed a modular, full-enclosure post pallet system for the client, consisting of "one base, two post frames, and two guardrails." This design ensures structural stability while also providing the flexibility of disassembly.

1. A Robust and Fully Demountable Structure

Design Analysis: The entire rack is composed of three parts: a sturdy base, two post frames that serve as the main supports, and two guardrails that hook onto the post frames. All components can be assembled via insertion or hooking without the need for tools.

Client Value: This design ensures a four-sided enclosure, providing complete containment and support for the bagged potatoes, effectively preventing the risk of goods scattering during stacking and handling. At the same time, the fully demountable structure significantly saves space during transportation and idle storage.

2. Strength Optimized for Heavy Loads and High Stacking

Design Analysis: We designed the rack frame with dimensions of 47x47 inches (1200x1200mm), a design load of 2,200 lbs, and a safety factor of 1.5. This ensures that the entire system remains safe and stable even when stacked four tiers high (with the bottom rack supporting a total pressure of nearly 8,800 lbs or 4 tons).

3. Cost-Effectiveness Considered for the Cold Storage Environment

Design Analysis: Since the client specified that the racks would only be used inside the cold storage and not exposed to outdoor rain, we recommended and adopted the more cost-effective electrostatic powder coating as the surface treatment.

Client Value: This saved the client costs while meeting the necessary anti-corrosion requirements. It reflects our professional capability to provide the most suitable recommendations based on the client's actual use case.

Conclusion: A Deep Understanding of Needs Delivers the Most Suitable Solution

By providing a structurally sound, fully demountable post pallet with four-sided fencing, we perfectly solved the client's challenge of storing bagged potatoes in a high-density, safe manner within their cold storage. This case proves that the best solution is not one-size-fits-all, but one that stems from a deep understanding of and precise response to the client's specific use case and core needs.
