In this sample project, the choice of packaging changed both container density and packaging cost. Bubble film with straps kept the load compact at 52 units per 40ft container, while a wooden crate at 90 RMB per square meter reduced the number to about 30 units.

Container loading is a packaging decision, not just a transport one

For international buyers, a 40ft container is economical only if the cargo volume is well utilized. With stackable racks, the packaging method can determine whether the shipment remains dense and stable or becomes bulky cargo that wastes transport space. In this sample, the inverted nestainer rack was specified with internal dimensions of 1300 x 900 x 1900 mm, overall dimensions of 1400 x 950 x 1980 mm, a handling clearance of 100 mm, and a unit weight of about 60 kg. These numbers matter because they define what can be protected by the frame itself and what still requires external packaging.

The image shows the rack in a warehouse storage condition, but the export logic is the same: the cleaner the frame nests, stacks, and aligns, the more pieces can be moved per container. That is why packaging is not a footnote. It directly changes how many units leave the port in a single booking.

Bubble film plus straps: the lighter packaging wins on volume utilization

In the sample project, bubble film with straps allowed 52 units to be loaded into a 40ft container. This is the main reason many exporters prefer this solution for nestainer rack shipments: the rack structure already bears the load, so packaging only needs to protect edges, paint, and contact points. A full wooden shell around each unit is not needed if the shipment is already stable, uniform, and handled with predictable fork movements.

For exporters, this works best when the product is repeatable, the finish is not extremely fragile, and the route does not require a fully enclosed crate. It is also attractive when the buyer wants lower packaging cost and more units per container. In this sample, switching from crate packaging to film and straps increased the number of units per container by about 22 units, roughly 73% more capacity compared to the crate option.

Wooden crates protect more, but take up more space and carry fewer units

The wooden crate option in the sample was priced at 90 RMB per square meter. This means packaging cost is not a fixed fee. It grows with the crate surface area, plus the assembly and fastening labor required. Once a rack shipment is turned into a crated shipment, you add board material, assembly time, and extra external volume. The result is not only a higher packaging cost line item, but also lower cargo density in the container.

In this sample, the wooden crate solution reduced the load to about 30 units in a 40ft container. This is a serious trade-off. If the cargo requires full enclosure due to long transit times, difficult transshipments, dust control, or more robust surface protection, the crate can be justified. But if the buyer is only comparing cost per shipment, the crate reduces both the number of pieces loaded and the transport efficiency of the route.

How to calculate packaging cost based on purchase price

The cleanest way to evaluate packaging is to treat it as part of purchasing math, not as an afterthought. You start with the purchase price of the rack, then add packaging cost based on the chosen method. For film and straps, packaging cost is usually a small variable tied to consumables and labor. For a wooden crate, the calculation is more like a second product: crate surface area multiplied by the 90 RMB per square meter rate, plus construction labor, plus any allowance for waste or repairs.

That is why two quotes can look similar on paper and then diverge sharply at the port. The crate may offer more protection, but it also increases cost per unit and reduces container density. The film solution may cost less and load more units, but only if the rack geometry and export handling conditions are stable enough to support it. For purchasing teams, the right answer is to compare the total landed packaging cost per unit shipped, not just the packaging material price.

When each option makes sense

  • Choose bubble film plus straps when the rack geometry is stable, the finish can tolerate light contact protection, and maximum container density matters.
  • Choose a wooden crate when the route is rough, the product surface is more vulnerable, or the buyer requires fully enclosed packaging for export.
  • Do not choose a crate just because it seems safer if it destroys container utilization and inflates the packaging budget.
  • Do not choose lightweight packaging if the shipment will face repeated transshipments, high puncture risk, or long storage under uncertain handling conditions.

Cosa insegna il campione agli esportatori

La vera lezione è semplice. Una scaffalatura nestainer non è solo una scaffalatura. È allo stesso tempo un'unità di spedizione, un'unità di movimentazione e un'unità di imballaggio. Se si vuole un costo di trasporto inferiore, bisogna progettare per il carico del container fin dall'inizio. Nel progetto campione, l'imballaggio più leggero ha reso la spedizione più densa e ha aumentato il numero a 52 unità in un container da 40ft. La cassa di legno ha aumentato la protezione, ma ha anche aumentato la spesa per l'imballaggio e ridotto il numero a circa 30 unità.

Per il commercio di esportazione, gli stabilimenti all'estero e gli acquisti transfrontalieri, questo è il punto decisionale: proteggere la scaffalatura abbastanza da farla arrivare intatta, ma non sovra-imballarla fino a trasformarla in un problema di trasporto. Se si definisce correttamente la spedizione, il container trasporterà di più, il costo dell'imballaggio resterà sotto controllo e l'intero ciclo di esportazione diventerà più facile da prezzare.
