In this example project, the choice of packaging changed both container density and packaging costs. Bubble wrap plus packing straps kept the load compact at 52 units per 40ft container, while a wooden crate at 90 RMB per square meter reduced the quantity to about 30 units.

Container loading is a packaging decision, not just a freight decision

For export buyers, a 40ft container is only economical if the cargo space is well utilized. With stackable racks, the packaging method can determine whether the shipment remains dense and stable or becomes bulky cargo that wastes freight space. In this example, the inverted Nestainer rack was specified with an inner dimension of 1300 x 900 x 1900 mm, an overall dimension of 1400 x 950 x 1980 mm, a handling gap of 100 mm, and a unit weight of approximately 60 kg. These figures matter because they define what can be protected by the frame itself and what still requires external packaging.

The image shows the rack in a storage condition, but the export logic is the same: the cleaner the rack nests, stacks, and aligns, the more pieces can be moved per container. That is why packaging is not a side note. It directly changes how many units leave the port in one booking.

Bubble wrap plus packing straps: the lighter package wins on space utilization

In the example project, bubble wrap plus packing straps delivered 52 units in a 40ft container. That is the main reason many exporters prefer this route for Nestainer rack shipments: the rack structure already carries the load, so packaging only needs to protect edges, paint, and contact points. You do not need a full wooden shell around each unit when the shipment is already stable, uniform, and handled with predictable fork movement.

For exporters, this works best when the product is repeatable, the surface is not extremely sensitive, and the route does not require a fully enclosed crate. It is also attractive when the buyer wants a lower packaging bill and a higher piece count per container. In this example, switching from crate packaging to film plus straps increased the container count by about 22 units, representing an increase of approximately 73% over the crate option.

Wooden crates protect more but consume more and transport fewer units

The wooden crate option in the example was priced at 90 RMB per square meter. That means packaging costs are not a flat fee. They grow with the crate surface area as well as the labor and fastening work required to build it. Once you turn a rack shipment into a crate shipment, you add panel material, assembly time, and additional external volume. The result is not just a higher packaging line item. It is also lower packing density in the container.

In this example, the wooden crate route reduced the load to about 30 units in a 40ft container. That is a serious trade-off. If the cargo requires full enclosure due to long transit time, rough transshipment, dust control, or stronger surface protection, the crate may still be justified. But if the buyer is only comparing cost per shipment, the crate reduces both the number of pieces loaded and the freight efficiency of the route.

How to calculate packaging costs based on purchase price

The cleanest way to evaluate packaging is to treat it as part of procurement math, not as an afterthought. Start with the purchase price of the rack, then add packaging costs based on the chosen method. With film plus straps, packaging costs are usually a small variable amount tied to consumables and labor. With a wooden crate, the calculation is more like a second product: crate surface area multiplied by the rate of 90 RMB per square meter, plus construction labor, plus any waste or repair allowance.

That is why two quotes can look similar on paper and then differ sharply at the port. The crate may offer more protection, but it also increases cost per unit and reduces container density. The film route may cost less and load more units, but only if the rack geometry and export handling conditions are stable enough to support it. For procurement teams, the right answer is to compare the total landed packaging cost per unit shipped, not just the material price of the packaging.

When each option makes sense

  • Choose bubble wrap plus packing straps when the rack geometry is stable, the surface can tolerate light contact protection, and maximum container density matters.
  • Choose a wooden crate when the route is rough, the product surface is more sensitive, or the buyer requires fully enclosed export packaging.
  • Do not choose a crate just because it feels safer if it destroys container utilization and inflates the packaging budget.
  • Do not choose the light package if the shipment is exposed to repeated transshipment, high puncture risk, or long storage under uncertain handling conditions.

What the example tells exporters

Die eigentliche Lektion ist einfach. Ein Nestainer-Rack ist nicht nur ein Rack. Es ist gleichzeitig eine Versandeinheit, eine Handhabungseinheit und eine Verpackungseinheit. Wenn Sie niedrigere Frachtkosten wünschen, müssen Sie von Anfang an für die Containerbeladung konstruieren. Im Beispielprojekt machte das leichtere Paket die Sendung dichter und erhöhte die Anzahl auf 52 Einheiten in einem 40ft-Container. Die Holzkiste erhöhte den Schutz, erhöhte aber auch die Verpackungsausgaben und reduzierte die Anzahl auf etwa 30 Einheiten.

Für den Exporthandel, Überseewerke und grenzüberschreitende Beschaffung ist das der Entscheidungspunkt: Schützen Sie das Rack ausreichend, damit es intakt ankommt, aber überverpacken Sie es nicht zu einem Frachtproblem. Wenn Sie die Sendung richtig definieren, trägt der Container mehr, die Verpackungsrechnung bleibt unter Kontrolle und der gesamte Exportzyklus wird einfacher zu kalkulieren.
