Flat-Folding Motorcycle Rack for Low-Cost Empty Return Shipping
How a flat-folding steel motorcycle rack cuts the empty return leg: plug-in or inward-folding uprights, a one-side-folding plus removable-side hybrid, 12 empty racks stacked to about 2,490 mm in one project record, and why the volume saved against a wooden crate is confirmed per rack type.
Send It Loaded, Bring It Back Flat
The first container pays once. The return leg keeps charging you — every time you buy another wooden crate for a rack you already own.
Mtrack is a steel motorcycle pallet built around one question: what happens when the bikes are unloaded and the rack has to come home? Uprights can be specified as plug-in posts that separate from the base, or as posts that fold inward on their hinge, so the empty frame collapses instead of travelling at full height. The exact fold or removal method is fixed on your approved drawing — it follows the frame structure you order, not a catalogue default. On a Freight Hub project the requirement was one side folding and the other side fully removable, so a forklift can still reach the base from the side while the frame stays serviceable.
- Plug-in uprights: posts lift out of the base, so an empty rack travels as one low base plus a bundled set of posts
- Inward-folding uprights: posts hinge inward to reduce empty height and transport volume without dismantling
- Hybrid scheme (Freight Hub record): one side folds, the opposite side is removable
- Empty racks stack: a recorded T1919 project stacked 12 empty racks to a 2,490 mm column
- Compared against single-use wooden crates referenced at CNY 90 per square metre of crate surface

Pick the Empty-Return Scheme That Fits Your Loop

Plug-in posts
Detachable Plug-In Uprights
The stacking posts are a separate part from the base. Loaded, they carry the upper rack; empty, they come out and the bases stack on their own footprint. This is the scheme recorded on project 14905, where 12 empty racks stacked to 2,490 mm.
Empty handling: bases stacked, posts bundled separately
Recorded stack: 12 empty racks ≈ 2,490 mm (project reference)
Best for: closed-loop export where the rack ships back repeatedly

Folding posts
Inward-Folding Uprights
Posts stay attached and hinge inward, so the empty rack drops to a low stack without loose parts to track. The collector-storage project 15385 used this detail to cut the space an empty or in-transit rack occupies.
Empty handling: posts fold inward, no dismantling
Reference frame: 2,320 × 1,050 × 1,400 mm, 88 kg (project reference)
Best for: sites that fold and stack in-house between trips

Ibrido
One Side Folds, One Side Removable
The Freight Hub configuration asked for exactly this: a folding side plus a detachable side, so the rack keeps side forklift access and still collapses for the empty leg. Load was 250 kg per rack and the frame was widened to 750 mm to leave 150 mm of fork clearance.
Empty handling: fold one side, remove the other
Recorded load: 250 kg per rack (project reference), wheel groove 235 mm
Best for: racks handled from the side as well as the end
The Return Leg Is a Line Item You Can Design Away
Empty Volume Is the Second Invoice
A rack that ships out at full height and comes back at full height pays freight twice on air. Folding or pulling the posts attacks the empty cube directly — that is the whole point of the scheme.
Wooden Crates Bill You Every Trip
A crate is quoted by surface area — a recorded reference is CNY 90 per square metre — and it is consumed on one leg. Reusable steel is bought once and amortised across cycles.
Stacking Makes the Saving Compounding
Fold alone is only half the answer. Empty racks also have to stack: the 14905 record puts 12 empty racks in a 2,490 mm column, which is what turns a fold into a freight number.
Method Follows Your Frame
Plug-in, inward-folding or hybrid: which one applies depends on your upright structure, fork direction and stacking policy. The fold and removal method is confirmed per project before production.
Four Inputs Decide Your Folded Footprint
Send the Bike and the Loop
Largest motorcycle length, width, height and weight, plus how often the rack actually comes back — every trip, twice a year, or never.
Choose Fold or Removal
Plug-in posts for the lowest empty stack, inward-folding posts for no loose parts, or a hybrid where one side folds and the other is detachable.
Confirm Empty Stack and Container
Empty stack height, container type, loading direction and lashing. Counts move with wheel restraint, packing and whether posts travel fitted or bundled.
Freeze It on the Drawing
Fold method, pin or bolt detail, load and finish are set on the approved drawing. Nothing is quoted from a series table.
Empty Return, Answered
Can the uprights be pulled out, or do they fold?
Both are possible, and they are different products. Plug-in posts separate completely from the base so an empty rack travels as a flat base plus bundled posts. Inward-folding posts stay attached and hinge down. Which one you get is set by your upright structure and confirmed on the approved drawing.
What does one side folding and one side removable actually solve?
It keeps side forklift access while still collapsing for the empty leg. That combination was the stated requirement on the Freight Hub project, together with a widened 750 mm frame giving 150 mm of fork clearance and a 250 kg per-rack load.
How tall is a stack of empty racks?
Project 14905 records 12 empty racks stacked to a total height of about 2,490 mm. That is a project reference for that rack structure and post scheme, not a series figure — your stack height follows your rack height, post type and how the posts travel.
How much volume do I save against a wooden crate?
Empty-rack recovery is better than a single-use crate, but there is no single percentage we can quote. The saving depends on rack type, whether posts are folded or removed, packing method, loading direction and return frequency, so it is calculated for your configuration rather than published as a fixed number.
When is a wooden crate still the right answer?
When nothing comes back. A one-way export with no return leg and no reuse plan does not need a folding rack — the crate reference of CNY 90 per square metre is a legitimate option there. Folding only pays where the rack loops back.
What do you need before quoting the folding version?
Motorcycle envelope and weight, required load per rack, fork entry direction, how often the rack returns, target empty stack height, container type, surface finish and packing requirement. Fold and removal details are then fixed on the drawing.
