Cable reels stored outdoors are the most demanding version of this storage task. Rain, standing water on the base, wet cable and wooden drums that retain moisture act on the steel at the same time, and in most outdoor projects the finish question is decided before the layout is even drawn.
A galvanized cable reel rack like the Carack is still a fixed steel structure with bolted joints, perforated uprights and hollow sections. Hot-dip galvanizing changes how the steel surface reacts to weather; it does not turn the rack into a sealed, maintenance-free object. This article explains why galvanizing is specified for an outdoor cable yard, what actually determines service life, and the points related to rainwater and inspection that decide how the rack ages.
Why hot-dip galvanizing is specified for an outdoor cable yard
Zinc protects steel in two ways at once. As a barrier, it keeps water and oxygen from reaching the steel surface. Where the coating is scratched or cut, the zinc around the damage still corrodes preferentially and contains the advance over the exposed steel. This second behavior matters in a reel rack, because the surfaces that take impacts are precisely those where a paint film struggles to survive: the face of the upright where a forklift mast passes, the edge of the support where a steel drum flange lands, and the base plates that sit in moisture.
Outdoor storage is a specification decision, not an assumption. In a documented project, the customer requested hot-dip galvanizing specifically because the racks would be installed in an outdoor storage area: a main structure plus two auxiliary structures, four reel positions per unit for reels 1,400 mm in diameter and 800 mm wide, overall rack width and height of 3,000 mm, and a roller-bearing support specified so that a reel can be rotated for partial cable withdrawal. The reference weights were 583 kg for the main structure and 302 kg for an auxiliary structure. These are data from that project for that configuration, not a universal rating.
The same logic applies in the opposite direction indoors. When reels are stored in a dry, sheltered warehouse, an indoor-area coating is usually the sensible specification, and galvanizing adds cost without adding much. Outdoor exposure without cover is the trigger for the zinc route.
The rain problem: water inside the structure and rust stains at the joints
Galvanizing protects the surfaces the zinc can reach. The weak point of any outdoor steel rack is the surface it cannot reach: the inside of a hollow section with no drain or vent, and the narrow gap inside a bolted joint. Water enters through an open tube end, a drilled adjustment hole or a joint gap, sits there, and starts working from the inside out.
You rarely see this corrosion where it starts. What the yard sees is the symptom: brown rust stains running down from a drilled hole or a base-plate connection, dripping onto the cable drums, onto the cable itself and onto the concrete below. Rust bleeding is also a warning about neighboring joints, because if one joint is letting water through, the adjacent ones usually are too.
The controls for this are decisions made at the design stage, not maintenance improvisations: drain and vent provisions for hollow profiles, uprights oriented so that a perforated profile does not act as a water trap, base plates installed above the level of standing water, and a base that drains rather than holding a sheet of water under the rack. Confirm on the approved drawing that water can leave the structure, and check after installation that nothing in the assembled structure blocks that path.

What determines service life in an outdoor yard
There is no single number for how long a galvanized cable reel rack lasts outdoors, and a supplier who gives you a value without asking about your site is just guessing. The result is defined by a short list of conditions:
- The specified coating system. Galvanized is a family, not a single category. The process and coating thickness are budgeted per project, and an indoor-grade coating is not the same product as an outdoor-yard specification.
- Time in contact with water. Steel that dries between rain events ages very differently from steel that stays ponded or in permanent contact with damp soil at the base plates.
- Drainage and internal water. A structure that sheds water and vents its hollow sections behaves better than the same structure with blocked holes and water trapped inside the tube.
- Site chemistry. Coastal salinity, industrial atmospheres, fertilizer or chemical dust and washdown water are all more aggressive than clean rain.
- Abrasion and impact. Forklift contact, drum flanges and sliding loads damage coatings, and damaged areas are where corrosion starts if left unattended.
- What is stored on it. Wet cable and wooden drums that retain moisture keep contact areas damp long after the rain stops.
- Inspection and repair discipline. A rack that is checked after the first rainy season and then at regular intervals holds its condition better than one nobody looks at.
Maintenance points for a galvanized yard rack
Maintenance here is largely observation, early and regular. A practical checklist for a yard rack:
- Inspecione o porta-bobinas após a primeira estação chuvosa completa e, em seguida, em intervalos regulares. Procure manchas de ferrugem em juntas, furos e placas de base, em vez de esperar por perda visível de seção.
- Check that drainage and ventilation paths are unobstructed. A hole blocked by debris, packaging film, or concrete splatter keeps water inside the structure.
- Verifique a área da base: água parada, solo ou detritos acumulados contra as placas de base, e qualquer indício de que o piso não drena para longe do porta-bobinas.
- Check that bolted connections are tight and that no water is trapped in the joint gap. A loose connection works and retains water at the same time.
- Check the coil supports, including bearing-mounted supports, where rotation is specified. Rollers must turn freely; a stiff or seized roller overloads the drum and the support instead of allowing the coil to rotate.
- Check the contact plates and wear strips specified in the design and keep them in place, so that coils do not rest directly on unprotected steel.
- Repair coating damage as soon as it appears, using the repair method specified for the finish. On galvanized steel, the repair coating must be compatible with zinc.
- Keep coils out of standing water for extended periods and arrange the yard so that forklift approach does not scrape the coil rack on every cycle.
Two limits belong on this same list. First, this is a storage structure: if coils are to be lifted and transferred to a cart, that requires a bay and support geometry confirmed for the forklift fork, not just a rotating support. Second, layout is an exercise separate from finish. On a documented 10 m x 4.3 m bay, two rows of 1,200 mm deep coil racks left only about 1,550 mm of aisle, so the design adopted one row per bay. Confirm aisles and turning clearances for your own yard before requesting the finish.

When galvanizing is not the answer
Hot-dip galvanizing is the usual route for outdoor environments, but it is not a blanket rule and does not replace design:
- Dry, covered indoor storage. An internal-use coating is usually sufficient. Galvanizing is not mandatory just because the product can be galvanized.
- Exposure to aggressive chemicals or high salt content. When the atmosphere is more severe than weathering, the corrosion control system needs to be specified for that environment. This is a matter of design engineering, not catalog selection.
- Lack of drainage in the design. If water cannot escape the structure and the floor, a coating alone does not solve the mechanism; first of all, the water path must be resolved.
- The wrong device for the function. The Carack is a fixed, modular steel storage structure. It is not an automated cable carousel, nor a cable winder, nor an unwinding stand; and an auxiliary structure is not a self-supporting unit, as it depends on the main structure's upright for support.
We do not publish a guaranteed service life in years for outdoor use. The finish, drainage arrangement, and inspection regime of your project are confirmed in the quotation and drawing, and that is the only basis on which an outdoor-use value can be discussed.
Where a galvanized reel holder for outdoor use applies
- Buffer storage in the cable manufacturer's yard, between production, testing, and dispatch, with reels kept off the ground in defined bays.
- Construction and electrical equipment yards that keep drums of varying diameters outdoors, next to the workshop.
- Cable distributor and wholesaler yards, where reel sizes vary and a fixed shelf height wastes space.
- Project and construction collection points, where drums wait on a galvanized reel holder for the next dispatch, instead of sitting on the floor.
Perguntas frequentes
How long does a galvanized reel holder last in an outdoor yard?
To move from a general discussion about finishing to a configuration you can budget, send the coil list with diameters and weights, the yard area and how the coil racks will be arranged, the aisle and forklift details, whether storage is fully uncovered, how the floor drains, and the corrosion-control finish your site requires. That information is what defines the structure layout, the coil support arrangement, and the galvanizing specification for an outdoor cable coil rack.
