How to Customize Non-Standard Storage Equipment: From Operating Conditions to Drawings

If you do not have a drawing yet, start with the cargo, the warehouse conditions, and the handling method. For Derack, that is usually enough to define a workable structure.

When buyers ask for a custom Derack, the first mistake is to start from the frame. The right starting point is the work condition: what you store, where you store it, how you move it, and what problem you want to solve. Derack is not a standard catalog rack. It is a demountable post rack system built around the cargo shape and the warehouse flow.

That means you do not need a finished drawing before you contact us. You need a clear description of the cargo, the site, and the process. Once those inputs are complete, the structure can be proposed, checked, and then turned into drawings.

1) What a custom Derack project actually starts with

The first step is requirement intake. For a non-standard storage project, we usually need five groups of information: cargo type, unit size, unit weight, handling method, and warehouse environment. If the cargo is long, heavy, fragile, moisture-sensitive, or returned in circulation, those details matter even more.

Typical inputs include whether the goods are pallets, tires, pipes, panels, boxed parts, or bulk items; whether they are moved by forklift, crane, or manual handling; whether the rack will stay indoors, in cold storage, or outdoors; and whether empty racks must be nested and returned.

2) The usual custom workflow: 5 steps from conditions to drawings

For most projects, the workflow can be understood in five steps. First, the buyer describes the cargo and site conditions. Second, the team proposes a structure concept, including base size, post count, stacking method, and optional surface treatment. Third, both sides confirm the drawing and critical dimensions. Fourth, the rack is produced and checked. Fifth, the finished racks are delivered and put into circulation.

The confirmation nodes are important. The structure should be confirmed before production, and the key points should be confirmed again before the order enters manufacturing. If the project requires a sample, sample approval becomes an additional checkpoint. If the project is simple and the cargo data is complete, the cycle is shorter. If the load, coating, or nesting target is special, more rounds of confirmation are normal.

3) What information you should prepare before you ask for a quote

To move faster, prepare the cargo photos, the longest and widest dimensions, unit weight, stacking height target, and the way the cargo will be loaded and unloaded. If there are special constraints, such as cold storage, outdoor use, export circulation, or a need for return nesting, include those as well.

If you only have rough needs, that is still fine. You can start with the use case, the pain point, and a few field photos. From there, the structure can be narrowed down. The goal is not to force customers to draw the rack. The goal is to turn the operating condition into a usable structure.

Where Derack fits, and where it does not

  • It fits cargo that is heavy, easy to deform, or better kept off the floor.
  • It fits circulation use where empty racks need to be nested and returned.
  • It fits sites that need flexible layouts instead of fixed racking.
  • It does not fit one-size-fits-all assumptions or a standard product-only purchase request.

FAQ: what buyers usually want to know first

How many steps does the custom process need?

Usually five steps: requirement intake, structure proposal, drawing confirmation, production, and delivery. If a sample is required, add one more approval point.

Do I need to prepare a drawing before asking?

No. You can start with cargo details, warehouse conditions, and handling method. A clear description is often enough to begin the design.
