LINE-SIDE WIP STORAGE | STBOX WIRE MESH CONTAINER
Half-Drop Access for Faster WIP Picking: How Stbox Keeps Line-Side Material Moving
At an assembly line, a WIP container is not just a place to hold parts. It is part of the picking route. When an operator must reach through a full stack, move other containers, or call for lifting equipment before taking a small batch, the line-side store becomes a point of delay. Stbox is a collapsible wire mesh container designed to make that handoff more visible and more direct: open the drop gate, pick the required material, and keep the replenishment route clear.
The efficiency gain is practical rather than theoretical. A half-open access gate exposes the working side of the container without requiring the operator to turn over an entire stack. For WIP buffering and inter-process storage, that can mean fewer unnecessary moves, clearer ownership of each batch, and a faster response when the assembly line needs a partial quantity.
Why half-drop access beats searching through a full stack
With a conventional doorless wire mesh container, the visible material is often only the material at the top or front. If the required components are lower in the box, the operator may need to unload the upper layer, reach awkwardly, or arrange a forklift or pallet jack move before picking. The container may be structurally useful, but the access sequence is inefficient for frequent small withdrawals.

Stbox addresses this specific motion with a front half-drop gate. In the selected configuration, the upper front mesh section lowers to create an unobstructed manual picking opening while the lower part of the cage continues to contain the load. The operator can take a partial quantity from the working face instead of rearranging the complete container. The gate is shown lowered in the reference image; the final opening direction and operating clearance should be confirmed against the approved drawing and line-side layout before production.
One access motion, fewer interruptions between processes
For assembly-line WIP, the best buffer is one that supports both storage and the next handling action. A half-drop gate helps the material handler replenish a station in smaller, more controlled batches. It also gives the IE or factory-logistics team a straightforward way to separate “available to pick” from “held for the next process” without relying only on labels or memory.
The Stbox structure is a wire mesh container, so the contents remain visually available from the aisle. That visibility supports faster quantity checks and makes an emptying or replenishment condition easier to spot during a route walk. The spiral spring hinge shown in the product reference is the access hardware behind the folding mesh connection; it should be treated as a configured structural detail, not as permission to assume the same hinge arrangement on every variant.

In a line-side WIP loop, this creates a useful division of work: operators pick from the accessible face, material handlers move the container when a replenishment threshold is reached, and supervisors can scan the mesh sides and identification plates during a visual count. It does not replace a stock-control system, but it reduces the physical effort needed to verify what is present.
13967: put the opening on the 800 mm side that matches the route
Access only improves flow when it faces the person and the aisle that use it. For the 13967 Stbox track-unit requirement, the opening is customized on the 800 mm side. That detail matters in a narrow line-side buffer: it lets the access face align with the picking position instead of forcing an operator to walk around the cage, pull it out, or approach from the wrong side.
Before approving a similar configuration, map three points on the floor: the operator standing position, the replenishment approach, and the safe turning or pallet-jack path. The 800 mm-side opening should be checked against those points, adjacent equipment, and the actual WIP container orientation. The result is a layout-specific adaptation, not a universal dimensional promise for every Stbox.

When several containers are staged between operations, the visible grid and consistent orientation also support cycle counting. Teams can identify container positions, see whether material is present, and distinguish a working buffer from a full return unit without opening every box. If the contents are sensitive to dust, abrasion, or falling through the mesh, specify a liner or cover: Stbox is not a fully sealed container, and dust protection requires an added board or lid.
Where this access pattern fits
- Assembly-line WIP: use the half-drop face for partial picking of components while the lower load remains contained.
- Inter-process staging: position the configured opening toward the next operation so the handoff does not require a full-stack move.
- Visual inventory walks: use the open grid, identification area, and agreed container orientation to support quick status checks.
- Material movement: where the route requires it, use pallet-jack handling to reposition the cage rather than asking operators to drag or manually shift a loaded unit.

Questions to settle before specifying a line-side Stbox
Is a half-drop gate suitable for every WIP container?
No. It is most useful when operators repeatedly pick partial quantities from a defined working face. If the material must remain fully enclosed, protected from dust, or accessed only by lifting, a covered or lined configuration may be more suitable. Review the handling method, part sensitivity, gate clearance, and safe reach zone before selecting the access arrangement.
Does the 13967 800 mm-side opening become a standard feature?
No. It is a customization tied to the 13967 track-unit requirement. The correct side depends on the aisle, operator position, and material flow. Confirm the opening side and the gate operating direction on the final drawing rather than transferring the 13967 arrangement to every project.
