Steel motorcycle pallet rack with two-tier stacking handled by forklift in an export yard

Most pallet problems for motorcycles are not discovered in the warehouse office. They are discovered on the floor, at the moment when a forklift operator lowers the forks and they do not slide into the base — or they go in, lift, and the base elements bend because the forks were inserted into a channel that was never made to fit them. By then, the motorcycle is already loaded and the trailer is already waiting.

If a motorcycle pallet rack works as a warehouse-handling motorcycle rack it comes down to a few millimeters at the base: how thick the fork channels are, how wide the openings are, what the distance between the center axes is, and how much clearance remains under the structure when the pallet is resting on the floor. This article goes through those numbers based on data recorded from Mtrack projects, and answers the question buyers actually ask: can my forklift lift this.

Measure the Fork Before Choosing the Pallet

A transport pallet for motorcycles is handed over to the lifting equipment the site already has. That is why the design input list starts with the forklift, not with the motorcycle. Four dimensions decide whether the interface works: fork blade thickness, fork blade width, the spacing between the two center axes of the blades, and the clearance height under the pallet base.

Mtrack's recorded drawings used fork openings of 175 x 75 mm, 188 x 89 mm, and 200 x 69 mm in different projects. In a motorcycle club project (reference 14905 / 15052), the approved interface was a 200 x 69 mm opening with 820 mm center-to-center spacing, compatible with the club's own forklift. These values belong to that drawing. They are useful as a reference range and as proof that the opening is treated as a design variable — not as a catalog value that can be assumed for your own site.

The 25 mm Lift and the 95 mm Clearance Under the Base

A forklift is only half the story. Many sites move loaded pallets with a manual or electric pallet truck, and those need something different from a forklift: clearance under the base for the entry rollers and steering wheels, measured from the floor up.

In the engineering review for the 500 kg version of this pallet family, the base frame was raised by 1 in (about 25 mm) and the resulting clearance under the frame was 3.75 in (about 95 mm). That clearance is what allows a pallet truck to enter under a loaded motorcycle pallet instead of scraping the base or lifting it off the stacking feet. It is a design record for a specific frame, so the value to pass on to your team is the one from your approved drawing — but the principle holds: pallet truck entry is designed into the base, not left to chance.

If your handling mix includes both a forklift and a pallet truck, tell us both. A base suited to a 3,000 kg counterbalance forklift and a base suited to a pallet truck with small entry rollers are not necessarily the same base.

Four-Way Entry: The Aisle Usually Decides

Two-way entry assumes the forklift always approaches one end of the pallet. It works well when a rack is aligned with a warehouse aisle. It stops working when the same pallet has to be loaded onto a trailer from the side, or when a container door is too narrow to align the forklift squarely.

Within these limits, the base can be configured around your equipment: fork openings and center distance for your forks, a raised base for pallet truck entry, two-way or four-way entry depending on the loading direction, and stacking posts when the storage bay needs height instead of floor area. Motorcycle Pallet Handling FAQ

What fork opening does an Mtrack motorcycle pallet use?

Openings recorded on projects are 175 x 75 mm, 188 x 89 mm and 200 x 69 mm, with center distance set by forklift. A club project used a 200 x 69 mm opening with 820 mm centers. Your order's opening is confirmed on the drawing against your own forklift.

Can a pallet truck lift a loaded motorcycle pallet?

It can when the base is raised to gain entry clearance. In the 500 kg review the base was raised 1 inch and about 3.75 inches of clearance under the frame was recorded. Confirm your pallet truck's entry roller height and the loaded weight before relying on that arrangement.

Can the rack be made narrow enough for four-way entry?

Yes, with a width trade-off. In the freight project (15575) the overall width was reduced to 750 mm to leave about 150 mm of fork channel per side for side entry. Check the resulting platform against your longest and widest motorcycle before approving that option.

Is there a standard load rating for this rack?

No. The recorded design loads are 250 kg, 350 kg and 500 kg depending on the scheme, and the working load is fixed on the approved drawing. Tell us the motorcycle weight and handling method, and the base, posts and interface are sized together.

Send Your Forklift, Get the Interface Drawn

The fastest way to close this out is to send the brand and model of your forklift, the measured fork thickness, width and spread, the entry dimensions of your pallet truck if you use one, and how the loaded pallet is turned in the trailer or container. With that data, the fork openings, center distance, base height and entry direction are drawn together with the motorcycle envelope, and you get a pallet you can check against your own forklift before anything is built. The full configuration range is on the folding motorcycle pallet rack page.
