For a procurement team considering a galvanized wire mesh container for an export yard, covered loading area or outdoor staging zone, the important question is not simply “Is it galvanized?” The useful question is: which finish is specified for this project, and how will it be accepted?

The 13967 project record identifies an electro-galvanized Stbox variant with a coating of ≥8 μm. The same record supports outdoor exposure to rainwater for that specified variant. This is useful for general warehouse circulation, sheltered yards and ordinary outdoor staging where the agreed design and maintenance conditions are followed.

It does not mean every Stbox, every zinc finish or every outdoor location has the same corrosion performance. The 13967 value belongs to a defined project configuration. It should be quoted with the approved drawing, finish description and inspection method—not copied into a universal product promise.

Why “galvanized” is not one long-term outdoor specification

A wire mesh container’s corrosion exposure depends on more than the word galvanized. Coating process, thickness, surface preparation, welds, cut edges, drainage, cleaning, storage position and the surrounding atmosphere all affect the result. Regular warehouse use and occasional rain are different from continuous wetting, condensation, salt spray near a coast or contact with chemical vapors.

That is why the Stbox product detail master table, including its surface-treatment guidance in §5 and the boundary in §13, does not authorize a blanket statement that all coatings provide long-term outdoor rust protection. A buyer who needs that level of protection must define the environment first. A supplier should then confirm whether the selected finish and construction are suitable, rather than upgrading a general galvanized description into a lifetime guarantee.

For salt spray, humidity or chemicals, specify the finish and the acceptance test

The 15059 project record lists cold and hot galvanizing options with approximately 10 μm and 40 μm values respectively. These figures show why finish selection must be project-specific; they are documented options for a particular configuration, not a universal performance ranking or a promised service life.

For a coastal, high-humidity or chemical-handling application, the purchase specification should identify the exposure, the selected coating route, the target coating thickness and the corrosion or salt-spray acceptance standard. Confirm the test method, exposure duration, sampling points and pass/fail criteria before production. If the requirement includes weld zones, corners or cut edges, state how those areas will be inspected. Without those details, “rustproof” is too vague to protect either the buyer or the manufacturer.

What a practical Stbox coating confirmation should contain

  • Environment: State indoor, covered outdoor, open-air rain, coastal salt spray, condensation or chemical exposure. The finish is selected against this description, not against a generic “outdoor” label.
  • Project variant: Keep dimensions, wire, Q235 structure, folding arrangement and finish tied to the approved drawing. The 13967 and 15059 records must not be merged into one assumed standard.
  • Measured acceptance: Record the target coating thickness—such as the documented ≥8 μm electro-galvanized value or the 15059 project values around 10 μm/40 μm—and define where and how it is checked.
  • Corrosion requirement: If salt spray or chemical resistance matters, confirm the applicable test and acceptance criteria in writing. A wire-diameter inspection, like the one shown here, is a quality-control check; it is not a salt-spray result.

The risk of treating a galvanized cage as “permanently rustproof”

Overextending the guarantee can create a mismatch before the first shipment arrives. Procurement may expect a finish suitable for marine air, quality control may inspect against an unstated salt-spray requirement, and operations may place the cage where water or chemicals remain trapped. The resulting dispute is not solved by repeating the word galvanized.

A better buying decision is to separate what is documented from what must be confirmed.
